What is Shockwave for FreeHand?

Macromedia's Shockwave for FreeHand provides the capability to display native graphic files within your Netscape Navigator 2.0 browser.

Shockwave for FreeHand is distributed in two main packages:

  1. The Shockwave for FreeHand Plug-In. This plug-in for Netscape Navigator 2.0 allows FreeHand documents to be viewed on the World Wide Web. If you only want the ability to view, not create, FreeHand documents on the World Wide Web, this package is for you.

  2. Shockwave for FreeHand Xtras package. This package contains the URLs and Afterburner Xtras that users can install in the FreeHand application to enhance their documents for the World Wide Web. The URLs Xtra allows users to add URL hot spots to FreeHand graphics of any shape and the Afterburner Xtra allows for the import and export of compressed FreeHand files.

Installing the Shockwave for FreeHand Plug-in

Version 5.0 Beta 2 of the Shockwave Plug-In is optimized for performance on Macintosh 68k and Power PC systems. It is specifically for users of Netscape Navigator 2.0 or later on Macintosh System 7.1 or later.

System Requirements

A MacOS-compatible Color system
5 MB of free disk space
8 MB RAM
MacOS 7.1 or later
Netscape Navigator Release 2.0 or later

Installing the Shockwave for FreeHand Plug-in

From the uncompressed folder "Shockwave for FreeHand" drag the file "NP-MacFat-FH-Shockwave" into your Netscape "Plug-ins" folder.

For optimum performance when viewing FreeHand files in Netscape, it is recommended that you increase Netscape's preferred memory partition size. To do this follow these steps.

  1. While in the Finder select Netscape.
  2. Use the "Get Info" menu command on the File menu.
  3. In the "Navigator Info" window set Netscape's Preferred Size to 8000k or more, provided you have the approriate RAM installed on your machine.
  4. Close the "Navigator Info" window and Relaunch Netscape.
  5. When Netscape has reloaded, go to the Options menu and select "Network Preferences". Your cache size setting should be more than 5 megabytes.

To confirm that your plug-in installation was successful, you can select "About Plugins..." from the Apple menu. You should see "image/x-freehand" listed on the "Netscape Plugins" window. If you do, then you have installed the Plug-In correctly.

Using the Shockwave for FreeHand Plug-in

Activating Hotlinks

When viewing a FreeHand document in Netscape, the pointer cursor will change into a "pointing finger" cursor any time it is moved over a FreeHand object which has an attached URL. To go to that URL, simply click on the object while the "pointing finger" cursor is visible.

Zooming

Shockwave for FreeHand uses zoom tools similar those found in FreeHand. Once a FreeHand document is opened in Netscape, you may zoom in and out (up to 26,500%), or zoom to a defined area. When active, the zoom tool looks like a small magnifying glass with a '+' or '-' in it, showing whether you are about to zoom in or zoom out.

To activate the Zoom tool in the Macintosh version of Netscape, hold down the Command key and click your mouse button to zoom in on the desired area. Holding down Command-Option on Mac will zoom out. If you hold down Command-shift and click, the view will return to its original magnification.

To zoom in on Windows, simply click your right mouse button over the portion of the document you want to zoom in on. To zoom out, hold down the Alt key as you click. You can also hold down control while clicking the left mouse button to zoom in; control-alt with the left button to zoom out. Shift-control or shift-right click will return the view to its original magnification

You can also define a rectangular zoom area using the zoom tool. With the zoom tool active, just click and drag the mouse to draw the area that you want to magnify. That area will zoom to fill the entire space of the original FreeHand document.

Panning

You can pan or move around within the FreeHand document by dragging it with the "Grabber Hand" tool. To use the Grabber Hand, hold down the Control key (spacebar for Windows) as you click and drag with your mouse. The FreeHand document will be moved in the direction you drag.

Note: Since zooming ability is new to the World Wide Web, many sights containing FreeHand files will include the following graphic as a reminder that you may zoom and pan any FreeHand file in that site.
